Woman killed in crash near W.Va. 230

September 29, 2009

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A Harpers Ferry, W.Va., woman died Monday after she lost control of a 2006 Subaru Forrester she was driving south on W.Va. 230 near the Gap View subdivision, according to a Jefferson County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Karen Hood, 36, was pronounced dead at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after the 3:10 p.m. crash, Chief of Staff Jesse Jones said.

Jones said Hood was following a line of traffic. For unknown reasons, she accelerated and lost control of the vehicle before striking a utility pole, Jones said.

Hood was entering a right turn when the wreck occurred, Jones said. Instead of following the curve, Hood continued straight and the car went into a field, struck a small tree and crossed a creek bed, Jones said.

A fire started in the car but it was quickly put out, Jones said. Rescue crews had to cut away the wreckage to free Hood, Jones said.
