Mail Call

September 29, 2009

"Here we go again, 5 percent water increase, 5 percent sewer increase. Doesn't the general public know that our sewer bill is based on our water consumption? What are they trying to do again, smoke and mirrors?"

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the City of Hagerstown being in the real estate business, which they don't belong in. We got people for that, and rebuild houses and stuff. I think it's unconstitutional for them to take taxpayers' money and use it to buy houses to fix them up and I don't believe that's legal."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to know why the football teams at the Hancock High School are practicing on the baseball field and tearing up the baseball field when there's a practice field that was put in for the football players? It doesn't make any sense."

- Hancock

"Has anyone had any success in getting rid of stink bugs? We are being infested with them. Thanks for your help."

"This is for the caller who was complaining about the behavior of a brand-new neighborhood watch organization. I don't know anything about the behavior of the people, but it is a new Neighborhoods First organization. That's entirely different from the neighborhood watches. There hasn't been a new neighborhood watch in a half-dozen years inside the city of Hagerstown. This may, of course, be out in the county. I don't know anything about that, but inside the city, it was a new Neighborhoods First organization."

- Hagerstown

"Well, today they extended the unemployment again for Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. What about Maryland? What is our government doing for the Maryland people that's been out of work, can't find work? Why can't we have something? I guess you gotta move out of the state of Maryland to get anything that you deserve."

- Hancock

"This is to all the Christians out there ... This Fairness Doctrine that they're coming up with needs to be put down. You got to support the Broadcasters Freedom Act. This Fairness Doctrine is wrong. We have freedom of speech now, but we may not have it later. We need to act now."

- Hancock

"I just was behind in papers, and I read where they were thinking about getting the H.L. Mills building for the senior citizens. That's bull. Did you ever try to go up Baltimore Street or out on Summit Avenue? The traffic is terrible there. Besides, it's a perfectly good place on Frederick Street, nice ... no problem. Please don't let them decide to do this. Use that building on Frederick Street."

- Hagerstown

"For several years in a row, the Health Department ran the flu clinics at the Elks Lodge. We called in, we made an appointment, it ran really, really smooth, and was really, really good. Now they're doing it at the schools, everybody's complaining. Go back to the Elks Lodge, make people make appointments and maybe have a special day for those people that can't get out of the car, so just for those who can't walk, let them stay in their car. Why did they ruin a good thing?"

- Hagerstown

"Recently I was at Black Rock Golf Course playing golf. It was actually on Saturday evening, and when I went and paid my greens fees, they told me that I had to be off the course by a certain time. I was wondering why that would be, and here we were finishing up our round, we were on hole 17, and a guy came out and told us that we had to leave the golf course. Now, it was getting dark, but it wasn't dark. What kind of business takes your money and then won't allow you to finish playing? Next time I went there, they had a sign posted telling us what time to get off the course."

- South Hagerstown

"To all my friends: If you do not hear from me for the next several months, don't worry. I am retiring to my workshop in the basement to save mankind. It is possible that strange odors may come from the shop. But not to worry - the smell is necessary to rid the world of stink bugs."

- Hagerstown

"The County Commissioners seem to need to have a study for everything. Why then was one not done on the location of the senior center? The answer is that they would have lost. The gas wasted and increased traffic should have been considered. The seniors didn't have a say."

- Hagerstown

"Can someone please tell me how to harvest walnuts? I have some trees in my yard and this year they have gone wild with bearing nuts. Every day I have to go out and pick four or five five-gallon buckets of them out of my driveway. I hate to just throw them back in the woods, so if someone knows how to harvest them, please let me know."

- Hagerstown

"Every day I read the paper and watch the news. I'm so tired of reading and hearing about a family or someone being killed by some crazy person who thinks that they can just kill whoever they want. What is wrong with the world that everyone's solution is to kill? If these judges would just get a backbone and do the right thing by believing in the 'an eye for an eye' and the death penalty, we'd be a much better place to live."
