Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park offering parcels of land for agricultural use

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park says parcels of land intended for agricultural use are open for bid through Oct. 23.

Location descriptions, maps, application forms and additional information are available by contacting Michelle Carter at 301-714-2225 or Peggie Gaul at 301-491-1743; or by sending e-mail to

Bid applications must be received in the park by the close of business on that day, according to an e-mailed release from park officials.

Bid applications may be sent to the attention of Agricultural Use Program, C&O Canal National Historical Park, 1850 Dual Highway, Suite 100, Hagerstown, MD 21740. They also may be faxed to 301-714-2232.

The bid packages will be evaluated based upon the applicant's experience in agriculture, his or her ability to achieve park goals and the proposed bid amount. Preference will be given to farmers who can demonstrate knowledge of and experience with sustainable production practices, the release says.

Permits will be issued for three- to five-year periods, based on each farm's management objectives. Permittees will be subject to a one-year probationary period, according to the release.

Preserving the historic landscape associated with the C&O Canal is a vital part of the park's mission. In an effort to preserve the agricultural component of the historic landscape, the park manages lands through an Agricultural Use Program.

More than 1,200 acres of hay, row crop and pasture lands are included in the program. The available lands are in Allegany, Washington, Frederick and Montgomery counties.
