James G. "Buck" Royer, 87

Mr. James G. "Buck" Royer, 87, of 13425 Windsor Drive, Hagerstown, Md., died at 4:40 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, in his home.

Born Aug. 4, 1922, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Thaddeus Garfield Royer and Daisy Maude (Holtzman) Royer. He lived his early life in the Waynesboro area.

Mr. Royer graduated from Waynesboro High School with the class of 1943.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II, serving in various theaters of the war.

In the early 1950s, Mr. Royer worked for the Borough of Waynesboro in the water department as a plumber. He later owned and operated Bottle and Cork Liquor Store on Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, from 1958 until his retirement in 1985.


He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown; BPO Elks Lodge 731 of Waynesboro; Joe Stickell American Legion Post No. 15, Waynesboro; William Max McLaughlin VFW Post No. 695, Waynesboro; Friendship Lodge No. 84 F&AM, Hagerstown; AMVETS, Chambersburg; and the Marine Corps League, Chambersburg. He was a former member of the Washington County Sportsman's Association.

Mr. Royer played football for the Waynesboro Tigers for seven years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by one son, James G. Royer Jr. of Hagerstown; two grandsons, James Royer III and Daniel Royer, both of Hagerstown; two great-grandchildren, Ava Belle Royer and Waylen James Royer, both of Hagerstown; his companion, Joanne L. Hale of Hagerstown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was the last of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Hazel Keough, Catherine Gardenhour, Millie Spangler and Janet White; and seven brothers, Paul Royer, Donald Royer, John Royer, Robert Royer, Ralph Royer, Richard Royer and Sam Royer.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Guy Baer officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, where full military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post No. 1599, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
