Mail Call

September 28, 2009

"There is an urgent need for Americans to write to their senators and congressmen to establish legislation for English as our nation's official language. Our Maryland governor needs to do the same for our state."

- Sharpsburg

"I am a proud American citizen, and I am very offended by the U.N. speakers, of how they're tearing our country down, and even our own president. I am a Christian, and I've supported missionaries to help to feed and clothe many people over the world for many years, and I know many more of you all have done the same. So if you don't like this country, then the only thing I can say is leave and go to another country."

- Boonsboro

"This is to say congrats to Boonsboro's girls varsity soccer team for their effort in the Washington County tournament."

- Hagerstown

"Will Jimmy Carter please shut up?"

- Smithsburg

"This is to all the Democrats out there. I'm gonna say this once, and one time only, and hope you get - understand what I'm about to say. The Republicans are not against reforming health care, OK? Do you understand that? The Republicans are not against reforming health care. They're against the Obama bill that he wants to pass, OK? There's a difference. Republicans want real things done to health care, like tort reform and state-to-state availability, OK? So Republicans want health care reform, not ObamaCare."

- Hagerstown

"I don't know when the last time Ernstville Road was resurfaced, but what I do know is that in the last seven years, I've paid $35,000 in property tax, and you would think that we would get more than a double-painted yellow line down our road."

- Big Pool

"Whatever happened to fall - fall, now that most calendars refer to it as autumn? I remembered it as spring, summer, fall and winter, and used this to remind - daylight, by daylight-saving time, spring up and fall back. Why do you have to change things that have been that way for years? Our country needs changes, but certainly not that kind. Focus on more important things, and if it's not broke, don't fix it."

- Hagerstown

"To the person who is upset over the Health Department's flu clinic at North High: Welcome to Obama's government health plan."

- Boonsboro

"This is on the homeless in Hagerstown. Well, the way the city and county are going right now, they're gonna have a lot of homeless people in Hagerstown because they can't afford to pay their light bills, their house payments, the water and sewer bills and everything else. The city and county need to start making cuts like the state has, but they keep raising, keep spending money. The other day's paper you had 37 foreclosures in the paper. Day before that you had 21 foreclosures. Of course, people can't afford to pay their house payments now."

- Hagerstown

"Is the Hedgesville caller who urged those of us who oppose government-run health care to stop paying into Social Security aware that this is illegal? Social Security is, with a few exceptions, mandatory, and for you and or your employer to stop paying into it will surely land you in big trouble with the government. I'm not suggesting that you'd like to see us in jail - oh no, but you certainly are advocating and recommending we engage in criminal acts - which, sorry, caller, since I believe in the Constitution and the rule of law."

- Frederick, Md.

"I think the county better start getting some kind of spray together to try to get rid of some of these stink bugs. They're gonna have to do aerial spray or something, because these bugs are getting ridiculous. When the sun hits, they just eat up your house, they get in your house, they're in everything. It's a shame. If they can waste money on other stuff, they can surely do something about these stink bugs. I'm sure everyone will agree with me. This is a big problem and it's getting bigger."

- Sharpsburg

"I have watched shows on human trafficking that show young girls being taken from their countries, sold and put into 'slavery.' It is very disturbing and heartbreaking that our own president doesn't think it necessary to investigate ACORN's activity - but he is just fine with investigating the CIA. What's wrong with this picture?"

- Clear Spring

"This is to the person that said people may not want to work, about the homeless. Lots of people are working, sometimes two people are working, and it's just the point that the rent is too high or the home mortgage is too high, plus the utility bills."

- Keedysville

"Regarding the articles on the homeless in the paper, it just seemed like it was so incomplete, and old news, like you drawed off it ever since you got the first thing started in the spring. Freshen it up, get something more to get a hold of. It's lacking. It's lacking information for today, for now. It's a very incomplete article."

- Hagerstown
