Doris Virginia (Evans) Browning, 86, of Hagerstown, was called home on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at her residence.

Born, Feb. 2, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Maude Naomi (Foltz) Evans.

She was a 1942 graduate of Hagerstown High School.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hagerstown.

She retired after 17 years as a dispatcher at the Hagerstown Police Department.

She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Wednesday night Senior Citizens Bowling League.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry "Hic" Browning.

Doris is survived by a daughter, Cindy Anderson and husband, Andy, and a son, Terry Browning and wife, Judy, all of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Shifler.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Thom Smith officiating. Friends will be received immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doris' name to Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown, is in charge of the arrangements.
