Air Force Airman Edward R. Stewart, son of Michele Stewart of Hagerstown, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

Stewart is a 2008 graduate of North Hagerstown High School.

Army Staff Sgt. Jeremy S. McAfee, son of Chris and Lisa McAfee of Big Pool, was recently promoted to staff sergeant. McAfee is a combat engineer with the 25th Infantry, 66th Engineer Co., Scholfield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii.

McAfee was recently honored with the Hero of the Month Award, which earned him an Army Achievement medal while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Taji, Iraq.

In June, McAfee attended the U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Warrior Leadership course and graduated with honors on the commandant's list.


McAfee is a 2004 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and also attended Hagerstown Community College. He is married to Ashley Mayne McAfee of Hagerstown, and has a 2-year-old daugther, Kaylee.

Army Pfc. Amber L. Coulter-Ross, daughter of Debra Weller of Clear Spring, and granddaughter of Sandra Ross of Springfield, Ky., graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

Coulter-Ross graduated in 2004 from Washington County Technical High School and received an associate degree in 2008 from Bluegrass Community and Technical College, Lexington, Ky.

Army Reserve Pfc. Scott E. Middledorf, son of Michael J. and Donna J. Middledorf of Sharpsburg, has been mobilized and activated for deployment overseas to a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Middledorf, a motor transport operator, is normally assigned to the 619th Transportation Co., Auburn, Maine. He has two years of military service.

Middledorf is a 2007 graduate of Boonsboro High School.
