Paramount Elementary PTA planning walkathon



The Paramount Elementary School PTA's 11th annual Panther Pride Walkathon will be held Wednesday. Students, teachers, families and friends will take part in the approximately 2-mile walk through neighboring Spring Valley.

The walkathon is held each year at Paramount Elementary as the school's primary fundraiser. Many local businesses have contributed to the fundraising efforts as corporate sponsors, and students have been collecting pledges from friends and family. The funds raised by the walkathon allow the PTA to provide students with many educational activities.

Pet blessing set for Sunday



The annual pet blessing will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Haven Lutheran Church, 1035 Haven Road, Hagerstown. Pastor Linda Alessandri will provide the blessing and treats will be available. There will also be a photo opportunity.

Class of 1969 plans reunion



The North Hagerstown High School class of 1969 will celebrate its 40-year anniversary the weekend of Oct. 16 and 17.

Classmates are invited to meet Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. for a casual get-together at Bulls & Bears Restaurant, 38 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. There is no charge for the gathering and reservations are not needed; just drop in and mingle.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, the class will gather at Beaver Creek Country Club, 9535 Mapleville Road, for a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner and music. The cost is $33 per person. All classmates are invited to attend, whether they graduated with the class or not.

Invitations have been mailed and reservations are due back by Oct. 3.

TOPS 446



TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 446 had another net loss, with Eva again earning the title of "thinner winner" of the week.

Area Captain Parilee Barber presented a handout titled "Time to Create Lasting Changes." Members contributed ideas about what was helpful in their own personal weight-loss efforts.

At the next meeting, Kim will present a demonstration of products that the chapter might be able to market in a fundraising effort.

Rummage sale



The Saint Mary Catholic School annual fall rummage sale will be held Thursday at the school.

Story time and crafts will be held Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the school cafeteria for those ages 3 to 5. Seating is limited. Call Mary T. Milsom to reserve your spot at 301-733-1184.

TOPS 0077



On Sept. 21, TOPS Chapter 0077 awarded charms to three members who were absent the week before. Joan Jones received an award for perfect attendance and no gains for the month of August; Pat Horning was awarded for a 50-pound loss; and Betty Heck for a 70-pound loss.

Janice Frye won the "Get-R-Done" contest for the second week. The best losers for the week were: KOPS - Louise Kline, and TOPS - Emma Jean Robertson. Dorothy Martin led the program, using the TOPS magazine. She spoke about "Mindful Eating," and said members should concentrate on healthy eating and snacking. Several KOPS members gave tips on what has worked for them in reaching their goals and staying there.

The chapter's yard sale is today. Members may bring items to sell. Proceeds will go the chapter.

Church festival



St. Ann Roman Catholic Church will hold Oktoberfest Friday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Live music will be performed by The Rhinelanders. There will be bratwurst, bochwurst, German potato salad, sauerkraut, red slaw and German beer.

Tickets cost $15 per person. Tickets are available at the St. Ann parish office at 1525 Oak Hill Ave. until Oct. 5. The proceeds will be used for teens attending the National Catholic Youth Conference in Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 19 to 21, and also other retreats during the year.

HCC race walk clinic



Hagerstown Community College will hold a race walk clinic Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at its outdoor track. For more information, call Jan Price at 301-293-4219.

Lacrosse clinic to be held at YMCA



A lacrosse clinic for boys and girls in elementary and middle school will be held Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hagerstown YMCA. The clinic costs $10 per child. Lacrosse sticks will be available for $35. The clinic is for returning players and beginners who wish to learn about the game. The clinic will be hosted by the Hagerstown and Smithsburg lacrosse clubs.

The best loser for August was Rachael Cliffe with 3 1/2 pounds. The best KOPS was Virginia Rodgers.

Judy Peison led the program on swine flu.

The group did a skit called "Appliances on Alert."

Charms were awarded to Fanny, Judy, Marie, Stan and Virginia.
