Shade finds the light at Hancock

HANCOCK -- Freshman Brock Medva ran for two touchdowns as Shade (Pa.) prevailed 14-0 over Hancock in a defensive battle Friday night.

"We shot ourselves in the foot, offensively," Hancock coach Dave Mahaffey said. "We battled our guts out on defense. We scrapped well on the plays. We have great kids that work hard and, right now, we just need to believe in ourselves. We just didn't finish things that we started. We just need to learn how to finish. Shade played hard. It was two good football teams battling it out."

Shade coach Gene Boley said his defense keyed off Hancock's guards.

"Wherever Hancock's guards went was where we went," he said. "We had studied their films, so we were able to read their plays. Nick Harvey is a good guard for Hancock's offensive line. We just followed him, because we knew that was where the play went.

"Our defensive coordinator, Mike Pribish, is one of the best in Western Pennsylvania. He just does a good job of putting the defensive game plans together."

Shade (2-2) also got some timely offense.

Shade got on the scoreboard with 3:07 remaining in the first quarter when Medva charged through the middle for a 2-yard touchdown run. The extra-point kick attempt failed.

Shade carried that slim 6-0 lead clear into the fourth quarter.

Hancock (2-2) had a fourth-and-17 situation at its own 18-yard line with 7:29 to go in the fourth quarter. There was a bad snap on a Hancock punt attempt and the football rolled out of the end zone, enabling Shade to get two points on a safety and extend its lead to 8-0.

Medva had another 2-yard touchdown run through the middle with 2:49 left in the game to boost Shade's lead to 14-0. The run on the conversion attempt failed.

"Brock Medva is only a freshman, but he is a good back," Boley said. "He starts on both sides of the football. I just thought that his two touchdowns were good runs."

Shade did not pass the ball once in its 53 offensive plays and finished with 175 rushing yards.

Cody McDonald gained 98 rushing yards on 19 carries for Shade.

Ethan Martin made 11 tackles and Nick Harvey added 10 tackles for Hancock.
