SMITHSBURG -- One thing was guaranteed when South Hagerstown traveled to Smithsburg on Friday night -- one team was going to break a two-game losing streak.

Despite each team committing four turnovers and an array of penalties, it was Smithsburg that enjoyed the fruits of its labor in a 32-7 victory over the Rebels at Coach Carroll Reid Field in the MVAL Antietam opener.

The Leopards picked up 304 yards rushing to offset their turnovers and 65 yards in penalties. They shuffled five running backs in and out, and Ben Daniels led the way with 150 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

"We got back up after the Walkersville loss (51-0)," said Smithsburg coach Buddy Orndorff. "We told them to keep playing. You can't turn and run away."

The Leopards (2-2, 1-0) should have beaten South Carroll a week ago, and came out Friday putting pressure on the Rebels from both sides of the line.

South (1-3, 0-1), meanwhile, stayed in a funk that has continued to fester through a second week. Aside from its four turnovers, the Rebels self-destructed with 108 yards in penalties on 16 flags.

"Last week we took the hard approach, this past week it was a low-key approach," said Rebels coach Greg Kellick. "The wheels are starting to fall off but we've still got six games to play."

South's first lost fumble, at its own 24-yard line late in a scoreless first quarter, led to Smithsburg's first score.

Jake Gouff had runs of 10 and 9 yards before Derek Smith scored from the 5 with 11:33 remaining in the second period. Cullan Ganley's PAT made it 7-0.

The Rebels' next possession ended with Smithsburg's Sean McAuley deflecting a punt to give the Leopards the ball at midfield. Nine plays later, on his lone completion of the night, Justin Morgan threw a perfect spiral to wide receiver Jack Schwartz for a 23-yard score with 4:44 left and a 13-0 lead.

"That was, I thought, the big play of the game," said Orndorff. "The safety came up to double and Jack ran a perfect route and Justin had great composure with that pass."

Late in the third period and holed in their own territory, the Rebels coughed up the ball when Hunter Phillips' handoff to Ryan Wood malfunctioned. Dana Bender was on the spot for Smithsburg at the 14.

Only one play was needed, as Derek Smith swept around the right side of South's line for a score and a 19-0 lead.

After a trade of fumbles in the fourth period, Smithsburg scored when Ben Daniels' 59-yard run set up a 5-yarder by Taylor Damuth.

South countered with its lone drive that did not have a mistake in it, going 62 yards with efficiency. It included a 28-yard pass from Phillips to Cornelius Prather and runs of 14 and 10 yards by Phillips, the second for a touchdown on a scramble with 5:20 left.

The Leopards finished the scoring with 2:34 left when Smith ran in from the 3. South helped out with 23 yards in penalties.

Damuth backed up Daniels with 64 yards on 14 carries, Smith had 44 and Gouff added 32 for Smithsburg.

"We've got some good backs and we're able to give some different looks with different people," said Orndorff. "We got big runs from them at big times.

"South is a good team but right now they don't believe in themselves. They just need one good thing to happen to them."

Kellick agreed, even though he watched his team suffer mistake after mistake, generating 176 yards in offense that was nearly wiped out by penalties.

"We've got some problems to iron out come Monday and get ready for Williamsport," said Kellick. "This will be (Williamsport's) Super Bowl. I'm not down on these kids."

Xavier Richardson had 40 rushing yards and Phillips went 11-for-22 in the air for 101 yards passing for the Rebels.
