MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A 23-year-old man who was found Sept. 18 in a field near his home with a gunshot wound to the head is receiving treatment at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., police said Thursday.

James J. Dixon, who lives in the Royal Crest mobile home community east of Martinsburg off Grapevine Road, is conscious, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department Lt. Gary Harmison said Thursday. The sheriff's department investigator said he was not able to interview Dixon in a visit this week to the hospital because of his condition.

Dixon was found abandoned and disoriented by a passer-by at about 10 a.m. Police have said they did not know how long he had been in the field.

Dixon was clothed and found in a seated position, unable to move, Harmison said.

Harmison said the investigation into the shooting is continuing and no additional information was available.
