HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- Robert D. Kilmer, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Hedgesville, Sept. 22, 2009, after an extended illness.

Born Jan. 24, 1925, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late George W. Kilmer Sr. and Odette Beall Kilmer.

He graduated from Hedgesville High School in 1942 and in 1944 graduated from Potomac State College. He obtained his master's degree from West Virginia University in 1949.

Mr. Kilmer was a teacher from 1944 to 1950 at Hedgesville High School. He also coached football, basketball, baseball and track. From 1950 to 1955, he was a teacher and principal at Marlowe School. In 1955, he was principal at John Street School, and from 1956 to 1984, he was principal at Hedgesville High School. From 1984 to 1988, he worked at the Berkeley County School Board office. He retired from the Berkeley County school system after 44 years.

He was a member of the Hedgesville High School Alumni Association and received the first Outstanding Alumni Award of Hedgesville High School.

He was a lifelong member of Hedgesville United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school, was a member of the administrative board and lay leader for many years. He taught the church's Together class for more than 40 years.

He was one of the founders of Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co., and also an honorary lifetime member of the fire company.

He was a charter member of Hedgesville Lions Club, and in 2008 received his 60-year pin.

He was an adult 4-H project leader and assisted as a Tri-County 4-H camp counselor.

He received the Distinguished Service Award, Hedgesville Chapter of the Future Farmers of America.

He is survived by three sons and their spouses, Douglas A. Kilmer and Janis I. Reynolds of Charleston, W.Va., David E. and Jill Kilmer, and Nevin L. and Cele Kilmer, all of Hedgesville. Also surviving are grandchildren Glen W. Kilmer and wife, Bethany; Mindy R. Wilmer and husband, Calvin; Aaron Kilmer and Ashley Kilmer, all of Hedgesville; and Matt Reynolds of Charleston.

He was extremely proud of his four great-grandchildren, Austin, Javin and Davonte Wilmer, and Kaiden Kilmer.

He is also survived by a sister, Ellen Chiarelli of Erie, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Edwards Kilmer. They were together for 56 years. He is also preceded in death by three brothers, George W. Jr., Richard and Boyd Kilmer.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, at Johnsontown Bible Church, with the Rev. L. Jack Rudy officiating. Interment will be held at Hedgesville Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Brown Funeral Home.
