John M. "Jack" Shriver, 86

John M. "Jack" Shriver, 86, of Hagerstown, Md., died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009, at Somerford Place, Hagerstown.

Born Feb. 12, 1923, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Harry Raymond and Mary Ruth (Hedges) Shriver.

He was the husband of the late Romaine Spalding Shriver, who died May 23, 2004.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was presented with five campaign stars for his service in an army artillery unit during World War II: Normandy Invasion, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ground Combat. He was presented with the Belgian Fleur De Guerre and the French Jubilee of Liberty Award. He was recalled into active duty during the Korean War and earned a Korean War Ribbon. He retired from the military in 1973, as a MSGT in the 167th Air National Guard Unit, based in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Jack later retired as an official of the Western Maryland Railroad and CSX Corp. He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge No. 378 and Morris Frock Post No. 42 of the American Legion.

Mr. Shriver is survived by one son, Gary Shriver and wife, Pamela, of Green Bay, Wis.; one sister, Lois Shriver Laurent of Cumberland, Md.; and his Yorkshire terrier and loyal companion, Tinker Belle.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
