Frederick H. Spigler Jr.

LUTHERVILLE, Md. - Frederick H. Spigler Jr. died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at College Manor in Lutherville, Md.

Born and raised in Hagerstown, Md., he lived in Salisbury, Md., for six years, and lived in Lutherville since 1965.

He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1946, graduated from University of Maryland with a B.A. degree in education in 1954, received an M.A. in American history in 1955, and a Doctor of Education in 1988.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948, and from 1950 to 1951.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janice Brewer Spigler; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ronald Mathieu; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Donna Spigler; grandchildren, Anne and her husband, Zach Hanson, Erik Fulton, Felicia and her husband, Thomas Lessard, and Chelsey Spigler; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Blair Spigler and his wife, Gail, and Barbara Snyder.

He was a teacher in Hagerstown and a high school supervisor in Salisbury. With the Maryland State Teachers Association, he worked for teachers in Annapolis. He was an education aide on the staff of Gov. Marvin Mandel and acting governor Blair Lee III. He set up and organized the Carroll County Community College, then worked for the State Board for Higher Education. He was assistant to the president, Community College of Baltimore City.

He was a member, elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Havenwood Presbyterian Church; moderator of the Presbytery of Baltimore, as well as a member of various committees of the Presbytery; board member and president of the Mental Health Association of Maryland; board member and president of the Central Maryland Ecumenical Council; and board member of Senior Box Office of Baltimore County.

A memorial service will be held at Havenwood Presbyterian Church, 100 East Ridgely Road, Lutherville, today at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Havenwood Endowment Fund, 100 East Ridgely Road, Lutherville, MD 21093-5223.

Peaceful Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Center, P.A., Timonium, Md., is in charge of arrangements.
