Randi Bakner has been hired by The Herald-Mail Co. as special events/promotions coordinator in the product development department.

In addition to handling special event duties, Bakner will be overseeing basic marketing functions and eventually assisting with the company's Newspapers in Education program. A graduate of Waynesboro (Pa.) High School, Bakner earned a B.S. in business administration from Penn State and an MBA from Mount St. Mary's University. She worked for JLG Industries from 2004 to 2009, the last three years of which she served as marketing communications specialist, responsible for scheduling, planning and carrying out all logistical details for the firm's annual trade shows. Before working at JLG, Bakner was marketing convention coordinator for Rowman & Littlefield Publishers in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.

In circulation, Dianne Stevens, Joey Heacock and Tyler Ernde have been hired as part-time assistants in the company's Hagerstown distribution center.

Stevens, a graduate of Middletown (Md.) High School, has an extensive background in the industry, having worked for both the S.W. Keasey Distribution Agency and the Frederick News-Post.


Heacock has worked the past 5 1/2 years for Byers Stop-N-Go.

Ernde is a graduate of North Hagerstown High School, and has worked the past year and a half at KFC in Hagerstown.

In packaging and distribution, British Pearson has been hired as a part-time inserter. A graduate of Frederick High School, Pearson has worked for MedSource, Comfort Suites and Thomas English Muffin Bakery.

Penn State Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. - Conner Gilbert has been hired as sports information director at Penn State Altoona.

Gilbert, a Hagerstown native, is a 2009 graduate of Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., and holds a B.A. in communications. During his four years at the college, he also worked as the sports information assistant, where he shot video and still photographs of sporting events, did live play-by-play game broadcasts for radio and television, maintained the athletics Web site and coordinated media interviews. He was a staff writer for The Review, Saint Vincent's newspaper, and was also a Pittsburgh Steelers training camp reporter for the college.

Gilbert is a part-time sports correspondent for The Herald-Mail.

Mercedes-Benz of Hagerstown

Justin Harbert has been appointed as general manager of operations at Mercedes-Benz of Hagerstown.

Harbert has more than 10 years of Mercedes-Benz experience, holding positions in sales, finance and management. He has earned gold and platinum sales achievement awards as well as master-level management certification. He also recently completed the NADA General Dealership Management Program for overall management of an automotive dealership.

Harbert is a graduate of North Hagerstown High School and Frostburg (Md.) State University.

Washington County Health Department

Katie O'Neil has been selected as the Washington County Health Department's Employee for the Quarter for the third quarter of 2009.

O'Neil has been employed by the health department since 2003 with the department's Addictions and Mental Health Division. She started with the department by working with adolescent outpatient substance abuse counseling, then transferred to the Mental Health Unit. She works with both adults and adolescents, working two days a week with adults and the other three days as an adolescent counselor with the Catoctin Summit residential facility.

Total Fitness Specialists

Lori Thomas of Total Fitness Specialists Inc. recently completed two continuing education courses through the IDEA Health & Fitness Association.

Thomas completed "Fall Prevention," which included research-proven exercise programming strategies that will reduce the risk of falls and improve functional performance in older adults. She will offer a six-week workshop beginning in October to educate the public on fall prevention.

Thomas also completed "Diet and Gastrointestinal Ailments, Creating Wellness Program for Schools and Benefiting from Functional Foods."

Orrstown Financial Advisors

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Benjamin Walters has joined Orrstown Financial Advisors as a financial adviser.

Walters will serve the bank's Hagerstown, Greencastle, and Chambersburg markets.

Walters has more than 10 years of experience in the financial services industry and holds the Series 7 license in addition to accident, health, life, disability, property and casualty insurance licenses.

Cornerstone Wealth Management Group

Scott Ford, president of Cornerstone Wealth Management Group in Hagerstown, has been named one of 25 individuals who have been accepted as founding members of the International Association of Financial, Sport and Celebrity Advisers (IAFSCA).

The association's leadership is composed of business and military leaders who have joined forces with some of the nation's nonprofit foundations and talent agencies representing top celebrities, athletes, causes and other VIPs.

Ford has been operating Cornerstone Wealth Management Group since 1996.
