Hubs' offense explodes for victory

HAGERSTOWN -- North Hagerstown played development football on Thursday.

First the Hubs made sure they got back some missing real estate. Then they "brought the house."

North found itself in Loch Raven's neighborhood the entire game, as the Hubs turned the Raiders into Evaders with a humiliating 66-12 victory at Mike Callas Stadium.

"Our defense set the tone," said North coach Dan Cunningham. "They came to play and they gave us the short field. Last week, we gave the defense the short end of the stick, but they got it all back for us tonight. The defense was phenomenal tonight. We sent them in and they brought the house."

North basically pushed Loch Raven out the back door and evicted the Raiders.

Anthony Winter ran for three touchdowns and A.J. Staley powered to two more to pace the ground game. Quarterback Lynn Lowman -- who shared duties with Steve Coccodrilli -- passed for two scores, including an unlikely one on a batted pass to tackle Dylan Dopson.

The Hubs held Loch Raven to 2 yards of offense, including minus-96 yards rushing on 26 carries. Seventeen of the Raiders' 26 running plays went for negative yardage, including two runs coming off of bad punt snaps.

Add to it three lost fumbles and three interceptions -- two by Joe Mattei -- and North made the Raiders feel like they were going through foreclosure.

"We knew they had a lot of speed and we spent a lot of time scouting them," Cunningham said. "They didn't do anything different than we saw. They got into some very predictable play situations and we knew everything that was coming."

It made it all easy pickings for North which led 26-12 at the half before closing out the game with a 24-point third quarter. The Hubs scored three touchdowns in the first 2:45 of the second half.

It didn't look like North would have such success if you based everything on the first play. Loch Raven's Maxwell Wilson ran the opening kickoff back 84 yards in the first 12 seconds of the game.

It was Loch Raven's only hurrah.

Staley set the offensive tone by powering for an 11-yard touchdown and Steve Coccodrilli hit Greg Pheabus with a 6-yard out pass in the end zone to give North a 14-6 lead after one quarter.

Lowman hit Derek Black for a 37-yard score and Winter scored from the 4 to give North a commanding 20-point lead. But the Raiders scored at the halftime horn when quarterback Steve Boudouris hit Maxwell on a 21-yard scoring pass to make it 26-12.

"The word of the week was 'finish,'" Cunningham said. "You have to go out and get what you started done."

The finishing touches started at the start of the second half.

North got a fumble recovery by Delontay Lloyd-Smith at Loch Raven's 23 into a 3-yard score by Staley. Mattei's second interception 30 seconds later became a 10-yard TD run by Winter. And a fumble recovery by Corey Ballard 30 seconds after that became Lowman's fluke scoring pass.

Lowman rolled out of the pocket at the Raiders 13 and had his pass blocked. The ball found itself in Dopson's hands, who rambled the final 12 yards for a score to give the Hubs a 46-12 with 9:15 remaining in the quarter.

Anthony Wells scored on a 38-yard run and Winter bulled in from the 2 to give the Hubs a 60-12 lead after three quarters. Anthony Bobbitt scored from the 9 in the fourth quarter to close the scoring.

North rolled up 344 yards of offense, led by Wells with 105 yards on eight carries, while Winter added 77 yards and Staley had 75.

"This is a great group of kids who are eager to learn," Cunningham said. "This is a nice reward for all their sacrifice."
