SMITHSBURG - Lela Berniece Strubel, 95, of Smithsburg, Md., died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at her home.

Born June 7, 1914, in Thorny Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Daniel Thomas and Melvina Kate Perry Tharp.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron James Strubel.

She graduated from Shepherd College.

She was employed as a teacher by the Washington County Board of Education for 31 years, retiring in 1984.

She was a member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Heiberger of Hagerstown, Sandra Brown of Sharpsburg, Md., and Linda Lent of Smithsburg; three sons, Ronald Lee Strubel of Hagerstown, James Robert Strubel of Gaithersburg, Md., and James Robert Strubel Jr. of Clear Spring, Md.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Nathan Lent; and one brother, Layton Tharp.

Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Michael E. Seger will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
