WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Mr. Leonard O. Shatzer, 75, of 9175 Gap Road, Waynesboro, Pa., and formerly of Taneytown, Md., died Monday afternoon, Sept. 14, 2009, at his home. Death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes.

Born Oct. 25, 1933, in Smithsburg, Md., he was the son of the late Wilbur "Wib" and Ada J. (Fleagle) Shatzer. He lived his early life in the Smithsburg area.

Mr. Shatzer graduated from Smithsburg High School with the class of 1953.

Mr. Shatzer owned and operated L&S Steel Erectors, Taneytown, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Taneytown, and the Taneytown Lions Club.

Mr. Shatzer enjoyed gardening, watching birds, baseball games, football games and old movies, especially westerns.

He is survived by two daughters, Cinda Toms and her husband Rick of Hagerstown, Md., and Candi Rahn of Waynesboro; three sons, Lance Shatzer of New Oxford, Pa., and Brian Shatzer and Christopher Bumbaugh, both of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, Kyle Ditch, Kiah Rahn and her daughter Aubrey, Brent Toms, Kelly Toms, Autumn Bumbaugh and Sierra Bumbaugh; two sisters, Blanche Gilbert and her husband Jim, and Rose Myers and her husband George, all of Hagerstown; two brothers, Norman Shatzer and his wife Gloria of Hagerstown and Franklin Shatzer and his wife Jean of Waynesboro; two former wives, Dorcas "Skip" Rohrer of Hagerstown and Vivian Shatzer of Chambersburg; and nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his companion of 16 years, Catherine Martin.

Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Robert R. Rock officiating. Burial will follow in Harbaugh Church Cemetery, Rouzerville, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
