WILLIAMSPORT - J. Allen Clopper, 93, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Williamsport, Md., and formerly of Breeze Hill Farm, passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, at Homewood of Williamsport.

Born in Clear Spring, Nov. 2, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles Finley and Virginia Hornbaker Clopper.

He was a teacher at Hancock High School for six years and then for 30 years employed by Fairchild Aircraft, retiring as director of flight test engineering.

He graduated as valedictorian in the class of 1932 at Clear Spring High School and with summa cum laude honors at Findlay College (now the University of Findlay) in 1936. He attended graduate school at the University of Chicago.


He was a member of Hagerstown Rotary Club for more than 20 years; a 50-year member of Hagerstown Torch Club, serving twice as president; he was past president and honorary life member of Hagerstown Junior Chamber of Commerce (JCC); past vice president Maryland JCC; past member of JCC National Board of Directors; past president, program chairman and honorary life member of Southern Engineering Society; past president of Fairchild Pegasus (supervisors) Club and of Institute of Aeronautical Sciences chapter; and a charter member of Society of Flight Test Engineers. He was appointed by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Designated Engineering Representative; was named a distinguished associate of University of Findlay; was first president of Washington County Council of Christian Laymen; charter member and secretary of The Nine and Ninety (social) club; and past member of the Board of Directors of Maryland Symphony Orchestra.

He was a member of the Hagerstown Presbyterian Church, serving as elder, trustee, clerk of session, longtime member of the endowment committee and the monthly newsletter editorial committee. He was co-chair, with Mrs. Clopper, of the yearlong 175th-anniversary celebration.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Caskey Clopper, in January 2004, and by a son, William Dale Clopper, in 1974.

He is survived by a son, Dennis A. Clopper of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Elizabeth L. Finlay of Reading, Pa.; a sister, Charlotte Eccard of Silver Spring, Md.; three granddaughters; three grandsons; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown with the Rev. Ben Jones officiating.

Family will receive friends one hour before the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Blairs Valley Cemetery, Clear Spring.
