School board OKs asbestos removal plan

September 16, 2009|By TRISH RUDDER

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- An asbestos abatement project was approved Tuesday night by the Morgan County Board of Education.

Maintenance Superintendent Alston Yost and Treasurer Nancy White said Greenwood Elementary School, Great Cacapon Elementary and Paw Paw High School are the top priorities. Great Cacapon is being used for pre-kindergarten Head Start students.

Asbestos will need to be removed from five schools and the Board of Education office building, formerly North Berkeley Elementary, White said Wednesday.

"We are asking the West Virginia School Board Authority for $303,000," White said.

The Morgan County Schools Capital Improvements Fund will cover $40,000 of the project's cost.

All the buildings have some asbestos in closets or under floors, she said.

"We do our best to keep it controlled and keep it sealed," White said.

The asbestos will be removed during the summer, Yost said.
