Around Funkstown

September remains busy

It's so good to visit with you again. I missed our weekly chat with the holiday last week. Hopefully, you found time to break out the grill and relax with family.

Thus far, September has been hectic and full and I adore it. Schools are deep into lessons and fall sports are keeping the kids hopping. Please take the time to check out a local football or soccer game. You will remember how much fun it was and just how great the food is. Plus, of course, it never hurts to support the athletes. Just a reminder that this week's varsity games will be played on Thursday evening. Check your school's schedule.

On that note, I would like to encourage everyone to keep checking their child's backpack for information on joining the PTA. There are PTAs in most schools and at every level, including high school. If you have some time, why not volunteer? It is not a huge commitment, but the rewards are great.

Yard sale

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association yard sale will be Saturday and table space is still available. Table space costs $10. Setup begins at 7 a.m. and the yard sale will be at South High from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For more information, call Christy at 301-416-7861.

Basket bingo

Trinity Reformed Church will sponsor a basket bingo Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Funsktown Volunteer Fire Co.

There will be 25 games along with tip jars and raffles. Food will be available. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. and bingo begins at 2 p.m.

Happy birthday

On Wednesday, lifelong Funkstown resident Helen Rosenburg Spielman turns 97 years old. Miss Helen enjoys living on her own, playing dominos and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I'm sure I'm joined by a chorus of Funkstown residents when I say happiest of birthdays, Miss Helen.
