Mildred Katherine Barnes, 91, of 11020 Pin Oak Terrace, Hagerstown, Md., went to be with the Lord on Sept. 13, 2009, and to be with Ben and all those who passed before her.

Katherine was born in Richmond, Va., on Oct. 27, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Thomas C. Gammon and Annie Belle Ryan Gammon.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Wiley Ben Barnes Sr., who died March 9, 1992.

Katherine was a homemaker, always caring for her family and enjoying every moment spent with them. She loved bowling and was a member of the Monday Night Women's Major League, where they were the city champs and the Friday Night Coke League at Southside Bowl for many years. She also loved watching her game shows and bowling on TV.


She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church for over 50 years.

Mom is survived by one daughter, Debra E. Huntsberger and husband Gary, with whom she lived; three sons, Aubrey "Barney" Barnes and wife Nancy of Hagerstown, Wiley Ben "Buddy" Barnes and wife Vicki of Boonsboro, David L. Barnes Sr. and wife Dawn of Williamsport, and daughter-in-law, Edna Barnes of Hagerstown; grandchildren, Mindy Hamilton, Chip Barnes and wife Linda, Kim Barnes, David Barnes Jr. and wife Lori, Jana Palmer and husband Jeremy, Amy Barnes, Mike Barnes, Caitlin, Megan and Jenna Huntsberger; stepgrandchildren, Angie Waters, Sam Hill, Kim Bowser and husband Todd, Jenny Clifford and John Lowry. She had 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, nieces, nephews and many, many friends of the family who also cared very much for her.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Louise Barnes at birth; one son, Dennis E. Barnes; two sisters; and six brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave. The Rev. Randall Reid will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., from 7 to 9 on Tuesday.
