United Way of Franklin County kicks off 2009 campaign

September 15, 2009

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- About 100 people turned out for Tuesday's kickoff celebration for the United Way of Franklin County's 2009 campaign.

The group gathered in Laird Hall of Wilson College to learn about the $730,000 goal and listen to a speech about "joining hands and opening hearts for those in need."

"Pacesetter" companies already raised $160,000 toward the goal, according to a news release. The funds benefit 27 partner agencies.

"We're off to a strong start, but it is going to take everyone in this community who is able to help if we are going to accomplish what we need to do," said Amy Hicks, executive director for United Way of Franklin County.

Rowan Elsom, a volunteer from Women In Need, was honored with the Cindy Hawbaker Memorial Award for community service.
