W.Va. group hosts awareness day for disabilities



BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Morgan County Advocates for disAbility Awareness present disAbility Awareness Day. The event is free and open to the public. Activities take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Berkeley Springs High School, 149 Concord Ave. Two speakers talk about "Being disabled doesn't change who you are; it only changes what you can do."

There will also be simulation activities and more than 20 vendors, including Social Security, Medicare and equipment suppliers.

Health screenings offered in Hagerstown, Frederick



Health screenings will be held Thursday, Sept. 24, at My Pilates Place, 16 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, on Thursday, Sept 17, and at My Pilates Place, 176 Thomas Johnson Drive, Suite 202.

Appointments are required.

Screenings will be conducted by Dr. Linda Potts. Potts specializes in blending Eastern and Western medicine and works with individual medical doctors to help clients.

Nutrition seminar set for next Tuesday



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A nutrition basics seminar will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the YMCA, 570 E. McKinley St., Chambersburg. Topics covered includes carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

The seminar costs $10 for nonmembers; free for YMCA members. Registration at the YMCA front desk is required.

Yoga classes offered by Chambersburg YMCA



CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The following yoga classes are held at the Chambersburg YMCA, 570 E. McKinley St., Chambersburg, and are free with YMCA membership. Nonmembers may purchase a class pass for $5 per class or may sign-up for a class for $29 for seven weeks. Gentle yoga is from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Mondays; yoga is from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays; mindful yoga and meditation from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays; and yoga for strength is from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays.

Free smoking cessation classes start Wednesday



FREDERICK, Md. - "Stop Smoking for Life," a free smoking cessation program, begins Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the second floor conference room 2-139, at the Frederick County Health Department.

Participants learn what triggers tobacco use, how to cope with stress, behavior modification, relapse prevention and more. Free nicotine patches and gum are available for class members with a doctor's permission.

Travel baseball teams to hold tryouts



MIDDLETOWN, Md. - The Middletown Valley Athletic Association (MVAA) Travel Baseball Program is holding try outs for its 2010 spring travel 15U, 16U and 19U teams.

Tryouts are from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, and Sunday, Oct. 4 at the Middletown Park baseball field, 7628 Coblentz Road.
