Hundreds on hand as YMCA begins soccer season

September 14, 2009

The Hagerstown YMCA Soccer Association kicked off its fall season Sunday, welcoming a large crowd of more than 350 players, a spokeswoman for the program said.

Usually about 325 to 340 kids sign up for the league's seasons, Theresa Searcy said.

Fifteen games were played at the start of the fall season Sunday at the YMCA at 1100 Eastern Boulevard, Searcy said.

There are five fields at the YMCA and there is still room for more players, she said.

The fall league is divided into five groups for ages 4 to 14, Searcy said. There also is an indoor winter league and a spring league.

Some members of D.C. United, the American professional team in Washington, D.C., were supposed to be at the YMCA Sunday for the beginning of the fall season, but they canceled their appearance, Searcy said.

Members of the pro team are expected to be at the YMCA next Sunday, when about 15 games will be played, Searcy said.

The YMCA Soccer Association is in its 15th year, she said.
