Broadfording wins McConnellsburg tourney

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. -- Hannah Young had five aces, 36 digs and 50 kills to lead Broadfording Christian Academy to its second McConnellsburg tournament championship.

Broadfording finished second in pool play, losing to Greencastle, but defeated Fannett-Metal, Shippensburg and Milton Hershey to advance.

In the semifinals, Broadfording beat James Buchanan 27-25, 25-12 before gaining revenge with a 25-22, 22-25, 15-11 win over Greencastle in the finals.

Rebecca Adams had 25 digs and 74 assists and Charlotte Worsfold had 21 kills, while Danielle Dubois was named tournament MVP for the second straight year, recording 26 aces and 62 digs for the Lions.

Kelsey Gearhart had seven aces, 22 digs and 31 kills, Erin Garns had 12 aces, 15 digs and 99 assists, Sammi Rudy had 13 digs and 19 kills, Nakita Gearhart had 32 kills, Katy Bobbitt had nine aces and 36 digs, while Lauren Verhoef and Rachel Kline each had 16 kills for Greencastle.

WARFORDSBURG, Pa. -- Nathan Kerns, Kyle Myers and Conrad Bender each scored a goal for CVCS (2-3-1).

Shippensburg 4, Greencastle 1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- James Kiama led Shippensburg with two goals and an assist, while Colin Mason added a goal and an assist to lead Shippensburg. Evan Moats scored and Kyle Baer had one assist.

Nick Cordell scored an unassisted goal for Greencastle, while Seth Sprague recorded 10 saves.

Red Lion 3, Greencastle 0

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Brandon Arnold, Shawn Dickason and Aaron Zolko had a goal each for Red Lion, which outshot Greencastle 19-8.

Seth Sprague had 16 saves for the Blue Devils.

Mercersburg 1, Washington 1

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Joey Roberts scored a goal for Mercersburg (1-0-1).

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- Natalie Adams scored both goals for Washington (3-3-2), which defeated Mercersburg Academy in the Blue Storm's season opener.

Ana Kelly had a goal for Mercersburg (0-1).


Mercersburg in Penn Invite

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Mercersburg Academy opened its season in the Penn Track XC Invite at Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday, and finished 20th out of a 28-team field.

Mackenzie Riford led the Blue Storm with a 41st-place finish in 20:48.41, followed by Abby Colby (66th, 21:22.90), Julia Simons (106th, 22:24.90), Sarah Duda (167th, 24:05.36) and Liza Stalfort (25:33.14).


James Wood 35, Musselman 14

INWOOD, W.Va. -- Trae Tinsman completed three touchdown passes -- two to Harlan Robinson and another to Matt Copley -- to lead James Wood to a win over Musselman on Friday.

Brandon Michael was 8-for-18 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown to Preston Sharpe, Jesse Hanes had a 90-yard kick return for a TD and Ray Wisenburg caught three passes for 52 yards for the Applemen (0-3).


HCC men win at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Hagerstown Community College won the men's team title at the Green Terror Long-Short Challenge at McDaniel College, topping the field of seven complete teams in both the 5K and 3K races.

Corey Centofonti placed second in the 5K race in 16:49 to lead the Hawks, who topped runner-up York 22-43. HCC's other scorers were Jeremiah Wilt (fourth, 17:02), Wade Miller (sixth, 17:26), Brandon Mauck (14th, 17:46) and Nathanial Clark (22nd, 18:24).

Led by Centofonti's fifth-place finish, the Hawks won the 3K race with 30 points. McDaniel was second with 41.

HCC was fifth out of seven complete teams in the women's 5K. For the Hawks, Jamie Wisz was 10th (22:47), Samantha Valiton was 28th (24:46), Kimmie Adams was 33rd (25:10), Veronica Wheeler was 35th (25:31) and Kayla Ferrario was 40th (26:12).

Atha wins invitational

MARIETTA, Ohio -- California (Pa.) University junior Jordan Atha was the women's champion at the Carl Broughton Invitational.

Atha, a graduate of Williamsport High School and Hagerstown Community College, covered the 5K course in 19:28, topping a field of 66 runners.

Carlie Colella, Casey Miller and Nicole Antalffy scored a goal each for Hood, which posted its third shutout of the season.Cara Jordan, Catherine Rendon and Laura Hines added an assist each, while Kirsten Cacciola and Rachel Buhrman combined for the shutout in goal for Hood (3-2).
