Lunch and Learn in Mercersburg



MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- At the Mercersburg Area Chamber of Commerce's September Lunch and Learn, Charles Haney of the Small Business Development Center will discuss the Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP) and other services the Small Business Development Center at Shippensburg University offers. Wednesday, Sept. 16. noon to 1 p.m. VFW, 20 Veteran's Way, Mercersburg.

EMAP is a specialized program of the Shippensburg Small Business Development Center that offers free and confidential consulting, primarily in these areas: assistance with environmental regulations, assistance with health and safety regulations, on-site energy efficiency assessments, on-site assessments to find ways to cut costs through pollution prevention, assistance developing and marketing environmental technology, and "greening" your business, www .askemap.org.

Free breakfast at Mount Carmel UMC



As part of the Servant Evangelism Program of the United Methodist Church, a free community breakfast sponsored by Mount Carmel United Methodist Church will be from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Big Pool Community Building. For information, call 301-582-2540.

Prayer vigil at Hagerstown church



An opening prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, outside Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. The vigil will be followed by a candlelight prayer walk around downtown Hagerstown with four stops to pray for peace with the different religious traditions in the community. A bagpiper will lead the procession. The candlelight walk will end at the public square with 12 minutes of silent prayer.

The event is led by PACEM, the peace group at the church.

Civil War site trip



SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- A limited number of seats are available on two field trip buses that will visit Civil War sites as part of the Civil War America, 1850-1865 course offered this semester at Shepherd University.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the group will visit Civil War Baltimore, which includes a tour of the USS Constellation and Fort McHenry. On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the tour will cover the Gettysburg Campaign, including all three days of the battle.

Each tour costs $50 per person, which includes transportation to and from Shepherdstown on bus, and a full-day, expert-guided tour. Lunch is on your own. Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Volunteers needed for Born Learning Fest



Volunteers are needed for the Born Learning Fest for Families with Young Children, ages birth to 5 years, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at University Plaza Park, 32 W. Washington St., Hagerstown.

Volunteers are needed for registration, first aid, the infant area, games, crafts, reading area, activities and set-up/clean up. Those participating may be eligible for child-care credentialing and Student Service Learning hours.
