GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Janet L. Bittner, 84, of 38 S. Carl Ave., Greencastle, Pa., died unexpectedly at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.

Born Dec. 31, 1924, in Antrim Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John Clyde Sr. and Louise (Cook) Bittner.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital for 40 years. In her earlier years, she worked at the former GEM Garment and Victor Hosiery, both of Greencastle. She was a 1942 graduate of Greencastle High School.


Janet was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Greencastle and was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 of Greencastle. She enjoyed knitting, swimming, traveling and watching baseball.

Surviving family are two brothers, Edwin C. Bittner Sr. of Greencastle and Frank A. Bittner of Waynesboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, J. Clyde Bittner Jr., on May 31, 2008.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, with the Rev. Martin H. Horn officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle. The family will receive friends one hour before the service on Sunday at the funeral home. The Greencastle VFW Ladies Auxiliary will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
