Man wounded in early-morning shooting in Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN -- A Clear Spring man was shot in the shoulder early Friday in a drive-by shooting behind a laundromat at the intersection of Linganore and Salem avenues, according to a Hagerstown Police Department press release.

Christopher Clifford Kolb, 20, was being treated at Washington County Hospital for the gunshot wound, which was near his right collarbone, Hagerstown Police Department Sgt. Paul Kifer said.

The shooting happened about 4:30 a.m., Kifer said.

Police have not identified who shot Kolb, but another man, Terry Wayne Conley Jr., 19, of 57 Wayside Ave. in Hagerstown, has been charged after police learned he fired a pistol earlier in the night, Kifer said.

Conley was charged with reckless endangerment and several firearm-related charges, Kifer said.

While police responded to the area of the laundromat to investigate a report of a shot fired, narcotics agents were following a vehicle traveling toward the hospital after the driver was seen driving erratically, Kifer said. The agents made contact with the occupants and found the wounded Kolb was one of the passengers, he said.

Police later learned Kolb and Conley were in a fight with a group of people in the 500 block of Salem Avenue before the shooting, Kifer said. That was when Conley fired a single shot from a pistol he was carrying, Kifer alleged.

Police believe no one was injured during that incident, Kifer said.

After the fight, Kolb and Conley fled the area, but about 4:30 a.m., they returned to the area, Kifer said. They were behind the laundromat when a dark-colored four-door sedan drove by on Linganore Avenue and the driver fired one shot from a handgun, striking Kolb, Kifer said.

The vehicle fled east on Salem Avenue, he said.

A reward is being offered for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person involved in the shooting, Kifer said.

Anyone with information on the case, including the identities of the people involved in the first fight on Salem Avenue, may call the Hagerstown Police Department at 301-790-3700, ext. 234, or send an e-mail to
