MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A woman was killed early Tuesday in a single-vehicle accident on W.Va. 9, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

The crash took place at about 2:10 a.m. on W.Va. 9 (Charles Town Road) near Shockey Memorial Boulevard, Deputy T. S. Shetley said in the release.

A 2000 Chevrolet Prism was traveling east when the driver lost control of the vehicle, which went off the right side of the roadway, went up an embankment and struck a tree. The car then rolled back down the embankment, coming to rest on the passenger's side and facing west in the eastbound lane, the release said.

The accident was reported by members of the Internal Revenue Service Police Agency, the release said. Two IRS police officers responded to the scene and rendered aid to the driver until medics arrived, according to the release.
