FREDERICK, Md. - Mr. Harold W. Swanson Jr., SGM, U.S. Army retired, 75, of Frederick, Md., died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Washington Hospital Center. He was the husband of Ethel "Nute" Swanson of Frederick.

Born Nov. 30, 1933, in Rutland, Vt., he was the son of Lucile Swanson of Springfield, Vt., and the late Harold W. Swanson Sr.

Harold enlisted in the Vermont National Guard at the age of 17 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950. He served for 26 years on active duty. He served two tours in Vietnam, and was involved in several major campaigns. His many awards and citations include the Bronze Star medal.

In addition to his wife and his mother, he is survived by a sister, Linda "Tilly" Johnson and husband Carl of Springfield, Vt.; three brothers, Norman Swanson and wife Nancy of Westford, Mass., Gary Swanson of Stuart, Fla., and Robert Swanson of North Port, Fla.; a daughter, Sandra Shiver of Panama City, Fla.; sons, Gunnar Swanson of St. Petersburg, Fla., Robert Swanson and wife Sue of Braddock Heights, Md., and Peter Swanson and wife Mary of Panama City, Fla.; stepchildren, Melody Stockman and husband Bill of El Cajon, Calif., Michael Smith and wife Margaret of Normal, Ill., and Cindy Jett and fianc Glenn Balcom of Frederick; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, five stepgrandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Rudolph Swanson formerly of Rutland, Vt., and a stepson, Joseph Smith Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Chapel Mausoleum of Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 U.S. Route 15 N, Frederick, Md. Inurnment with military honors will follow in the Veterans Garden of Honor II at Resthaven; the Rev. Warren Rice will officiate. Floral tributes are welcome.
