North End firefighters respond to two minor calls

September 08, 2009

Firefighters in the North End of Hagerstown responded to two calls early Tuesday afternoon that turned out to be minor.

Hagerstown City Police responded to the 1100 block of Hamilton Boulevard at 1 p.m. after receiving a call from a resident who said an angry neighbor poured gasoline on his own garage.

As a precaution, an engine, a firetruck and an ambulance were sent to the area on standby status, Hagerstown Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said.

DeHaven said the call basically was unfounded when police and fire units arrived on the scene.

At 1:34 p.m., a report of smoke in the building at Ashley Furniture at Long Meadow Shopping Center brought First Hose Co. and two Longmeadow Fire Co. vehicles to the scene.

Hagerstown Deputy Fire Chief Ron Horn said the smoke was traced to a malfunctioning light fixture in the store.

That call ended at 1:48 p.m., Horn said.
