Hubcaps to rock 'n' roll for local teen

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Music from an era that pre-dates Cameron Beckner's birth will help the boy as he recovers from a stroke.

A new trust fund for Cameron, 13, will originate from ticket sales for an Oct. 10 Hubcaps concert in Waynesboro. The proceeds can be used by the eighth-grader's family to purchase medical equipment.

"Some of the devices he's using aren't covered by insurance," said Tiffany Beckner, Cameron's mother.

Cameron suffered a stroke during a May 5 track meet in Boiling Springs, Pa. He ran the 800-meter race for Waynesboro's team and collapsed minutes later in the infield.

Initially he was completely paralyzed on his left side.

"He had no prior medical history," Tiffany Beckner said.

Today he's able to walk, although he tires easily. He'll receive Botox injections in his arm this week in hopes of regaining some movement in his shoulder.

Cameron's mother said he underwent rehabilitation five hours a day for five days a week this summer.

"I think he was excited to get back to school," she said, saying his friends have been extremely considerate and supportive.

The Rouzerville (Pa.) Lions Club organized the upcoming concert to uphold its motto of "we serve."

"We try to help people whenever we see a need," said Don Embly, who took the Hubcaps idea to fellow Lions.

The Lions sought donations to sign an agreement with the Hubcaps, a Maryland-based group that's traveled the country, Embly said.

"We enlisted help from businesses and individuals in town," he said.

The performance of 1950s and 1960s music is expected to span a little more than two hours. The Beckners will be presented an oversized, ceremonial check during the concert.

"We're going to sell up to 1,200 tickets," Embly said, saying each ticket is $10 for the concert at Waynesboro Area Senior High School.

Tickets can be purchased at the Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce, The Record Herald or Ronnie Martin Realty. Embly also will mail tickets for people who contact him at 717-762-7218 or 717-377-7942.
