No one hurt in hay bale fire

September 07, 2009

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- Firefighters twice went to a field in the 3000 block of Cannon Hill Road in Berkeley County over the holiday weekend to combat fire spreading between hay bales.

The first call came in at 8:18 p.m. Sunday, and firefighters were on the scene until 11:45 p.m., Hedgesville Fire Chief Mike Nichols said.

Some of the area started to smolder on Monday, so firefighters returned at 7:55 a.m., he said.

The fire was contained to 72 hay bales, according to Nichols. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters sprayed water on the hay while a local construction company used equipment to spread the hay around.

The incident report did not list a cause of the fire, Nichols said.

Assisting Hedgesville on the first call were crews from Bedington, Back Creek, and the West Virginia Air National Guard 167th Airlift Wing's fire department. Bedington sent a brush truck on Monday morning.
