Mercersburg community chorus begins rehearsals



MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The Mercersburg Area Community Chorus will begin rehearsals for its holiday concerts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. Rehearsals continue through the fall at James Buchanan Middle School.

The chorus, accompanied by full orchestra under the direction of Richard Rotz, will perform its holiday concerts Dec. 4, 5 and 6, at the Mercersburg Academy Chapel.

Music for the Mercersburg Area Community Chorus' 2008 holiday concert series will include Vivaldi's "Gloria," Britten's "Ceremony of Carols," and various anthems and carols.

Persons interested in participating should call the chorus office at 717-328-2324. No auditions are required to join, and persons of all levels of musical training make up the group. High school students are encouraged to join.

Artist wins popular prize award at Cumberland Valley show



With more than 900 ballots cast, Philip Colgan of Etters, Pa., received the popular prize award in the 2009 Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.

Colgan recieved the most votes for his oil painting, "Bennett Run." Honorable mentions were awarded to Paul Rhymer of Point of Rocks, Md., for his bronze sculpture, "Free Ride," and Kelly Moore of Hagerstown, for her pencil drawing, "Mood."

Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
