The art of flamenco dance on location in W.Va.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Generally associated with folk music and Celtic music, Shepherdstown Music and Dance is bringing the Arte Flamenco dance company to Shepherd University for a Friday night show.

The show is part of Shepherdstown Music and Dance's, "Music of the Americas" series, said concert chair and organizer Joanie Blanton. Shepherdstown Music and Dance has hosted folk festivals and concerts throughout Shepherdstown for decades.

"I try to mix it up," Blanton said.

Led by Natalia Monteleon, Arte Flamenco is a Maryland-based dance company that highlights the dance and music of Spain. The dance company uses a single concept -- that each performer has a unique quality to contribute to the ensemble -- to bridge the three elements of flamenco: dance, guitar and song.

The series was partly funded by a $5,000 grant from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts, which encourages recipients to offer programing that caters toward underrepresented groups, Blanton said. She also partnered with Shepherd University's Performing Arts Series at Shepherd, which will host the concert at the Frank Performing Arts Center.

Blanton said she's seen Arte Flamenco perform in Washington, D.C., and has participated in a few of the dance company's workshops. She said she's hoping to attract new audiences to the show in Shepherdstown.

"I think of it as building community by offering something familiar, and something new." Blanton said.
