James Marshall "Jim" Heishman, 78, of Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009, at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va.

Born July 20, 1931, in Harrisonburg, Va., he was the son of the late Russell James and Opal (Frye) Heishman.

He was a 1950 graduate of Smithsburg High School.

Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1950 to 1954, then joined the U.S. Air Force and served from 1955 until his retirement in 1974.

He was a member of Washington County AMVETS Post 10; Disabled American Veterans of Hagerstown and the Air Force Sergeants Association. He also was a member of Honshu Lodge 8 F&AM of Tokorozawa, Japan, and was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason.


He retired from the U.S. Postal Service Distribution Center in Frederick, Md.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia A. (Lucas) Heishman.

James is survived by one son, Gary Allen Heishman and wife, Chris, of Hagerstown; one brother, Irvin Heishman of West Virginia; two sisters, Rhoda Martin of Hagerstown and Carol Parker of Arizona; two grandchildren, Jaime A. Heishman and wife, Alex, of Greencastle, Pa., and Jennifer N. Murray and husband, Chris, of Winchester; and three great-grandchildren, Garrett Spillan, Jacob Heishman and Rylee Murray.

A graveside service will be Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. in Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Chaplain Phil McCoughly officiating.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jim's name to Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 510 Butler Ave., Martinsburg, WV 25405.
