September 04, 2009

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A 62-year-old Jefferson County man was flown Friday morning to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center after he was struck by a car while pushing a snow blower along Cloverdale Road, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Lowell V. Barnard, who lives in the Cloverdale Heights subdivision, underwent surgery at the hospital, but Deputy A.S. Hockman said he did not have any information on his condition.

The accident, which was reported at 7:32 a.m., occured just east of Heath Drive, police said.

A teenage boy, who told police he did not see Barnard pushing the snow blower along a road that travels past his home to a shed, hit the man from behind, according to Hockman and Jesse Jones, chief of staff for the sheriff's department.

The accident south of Charles Town off U.S. 340 was under investigation, Jones said.
