Corn mazes in disguise

If that ditty doesn't sound familiar to you, ask your kids.

This year's crop of corn mazes includes mazes in the shape of two Transformers - Bumblebee and Optimus Prime. There's also a Benjamin Franklin-themed maze and haunted mazes.

So have fun getting lost.

Here are some of the corn mazes this season in the Tri-State area:

Hagerstown Corn Maze, near Maugansville



WHEN: Open Saturday, Sept. 5, through Saturday, Oct. 31. 5 to 10 p.m. Fridays; noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

WHERE: Celebration Farm, 17638 Garden View Road, northwest of Hagerstown

COST: $5; $3 for ages 5 to 12; and free for ages 4 and younger.

MORE: Eight acres with three corn mazes. Moonlight mazes on Friday and Saturday nights. Proceeds benefit local nonprofit groups.

Misty Meadow Farm, northeast of Leitersburg and north of Smithsburg



WHEN: Open Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Nov. 1. 4 p.m. to dusk on Fridays, and 1 p.m. to dusk on Saturdays and Sundays.

WHERE: Misty Meadow Farm, 14230 Misty Meadow Road off Ringgold Pike (Md. 418)

COST: $5; free for ages 4 and younger.

MORE: The maze design is of a cow, pumpkins, cornstalks and the name Misty Meadow Farm. There also are rope mazes, pumpkin picking and farm animals to pet.

Stoner's Dairy Farm & Corn Maze, east of Mercersburg, Pa.



WHEN: Open Saturday, Sept. 12, through Sunday, Nov. 1. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

WHERE: Stoner's Dairy Farm, 7678 Oellig Road, off Pa. 16.

COST: $5 per person for people 3 feet tall or taller.

MORE: Five-acre Ben Franklin-themed maze. Admission also includes petting area, photo opportunities and hayrides.

Haunted maze nights are 7 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, Oct. 23 and 30. Admission is $7. Might not be appropriate for ages 9 and younger.

Harvest Farm Festival is Saturday, Oct. 3. On opening night, Saturday, Sept. 12, the maze will also be open from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $5 for ages 3 and older, and includes the maze and other entertainment.

Town & Country Nursery's corn maze, east of Leetown, W.Va.



WHEN: Open Saturday, Sept. 26, through Saturday, Oct. 31. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

WHERE: Town & Country Nursery, 1885 Darke Lane, east of Leetown.

COST: $5 for the corn maze. $3 for the hayride. $7.50 for the corn maze and hayride; get a quarter back to buy feed for the goats.

MORE: The eight-acre maze is not designed to look like anything from the air, which Bob Tabb said freed him up to make it more challenging. Also a straw-bale maze, hayrides, farmers market, and goats to pet and feed.

Winterbrook Farms, southeast of Thurmont, Md.



WHEN: Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Friday, Sept. 18, to Sunday, Nov. 1. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. on Fridays; noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays; and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

WHERE: Winterbrook Farms, 13001 Creagerstown Road, aka Md. 550, southeast of Thurmont.

COST: $5 for ages 6 and older; free for ages 5 and younger

MORE: The four mazes on a 40-acre field are designed to look like two Transformers characters, Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, from the sky. 7.5 miles of trails. Three mazes have checkpoints to punch on a map when you find them. New pumpkin cannon targets will be vehicles, including a Camaro, propped up to look like Transformers.

Ridgefield Farm & Orchard, northwest of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Tri-State Fellowship corn maze, northwest of Hagerstown



WHEN: Weekends, Saturday, Sept. 19, through Sunday, Oct. 25. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 to 6 p.m. Sundays.

WHERE: On the grounds of Tri-State Fellowship, 13153 Cearfoss Pike.

COST: $4 per person; free for ages 4 and younger
