Senior Center Day set for Sept. 17

September is National Senior Center Month and to honor the monthlong designation, the Washington County Senior Center is hosting Senior Center Day Thursday, Sept. 17.

The event will highlight what is being offered at the senior center - "Washington County's Best Kept Secret" - which is temporarily housed at Girls Inc. at 626 Washington Ave. in Hagerstown.

From 9 a.m. to noon, there will be demonstration tables in the activity room for:

o painting (watercolor, acrylic and oil)

o jewelry bead making

o computer instruction (on the second floor)

o Washington County Commission on Aging

o Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

o Benefits Checkup

o Living Well (chronic pain management)


o Washington County Health Department

o Wired for Joy (weight loss program)

At the same time, there will be live demonstrations in the gym for:

o line dancing

o strength training

o chair yoga

o Walking Away Pounds program

Light refreshments will be served from noon to 12:30 p.m. and Buck and Debbie Fisher will perform from their repertoire of country, bluegrass and gospel songs.

Zumba classes forming

Registration is now open for Zumba classes forming at Christ's Reformed Church, 131 W. Franklin St. in Hagerstown.

Classes will begin Thursday, Oct. 15, from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Zumba is a high-energy cardio workout done to Latin rhythms.

Hendershot ride

The second annual Tour de Park Linn Hendershot Memorial Kids Bike Ride will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at Fairgrounds Park from 8 a.m. to noon.

The event is for those ages 1 to 15, plus those with disabilities.

Participants can ride, walk or wheelchair through the fairgrounds. There will be 4K, 10K and mini-K options.

You do not have to raise money to ride, only to be eligible for prizes (minimum $50 raised).

Bring your bike, trike, wheelchair, walker or similar mode of transportation.

The grand prize is an HP Touch Screen TX2 laptop computer.

Second prize is a Nintendo DSI package or party at Pump It Up.

Third prize is a Chuck E. Cheese pizza party plus game tokens.

This year's event will help support Project Lifesaver, a local program of MIHI (Many Individuals Helping Individuals), that provides a radio frequency transmitter for participants to wear which aids in rapid location of a missing loved one who wanders off due to autism, Alzheimer's, Down Syndrome or other related brain disorders.

South High yard sale

The South Hagerstown High School Alumni Association will hold a yard sale Saturday, Sept. 19, at the school from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Setup starts at 7 a.m. Spaces rent for $10.
