What Do You Think?

September 01, 2009

Editor's note: The Herald-Mail invites readers to answer poll questions on www.herald-mail.com. Readers also may submit comments about the poll question when voting. A sampling of edited reader comments will run on The Herald-Mail's Opinion page on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

The question posted Friday was: Are you satisfied with the announcement by U.S. Rep. Steve Rothman, D-N.J., that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi won't stay in Englewood, N.J., when he visits the United States next month to address the U.N. General Assembly?

o "Gadhafi was very wrong to greet the released terrorist and make a big spectacle of it on national news. However the fault still lies with the Scots for releasing him."

o "The question that The Herald-Mail should ask is: Is it time to abolish the United Nations? That is a question that needs to be asked. Who really benefits from the U.N.? Not the average person in the world and certainly not the average American."

o "The question addresses our relationship with the Arab world and theirs with us. The reception the released terrorist received upon his return to Libya speaks of the deep hatred the Arab world feels towards the U.S. Gadhafi has made overtures to establish better relations with the West but still needed to welcome with open arms someone convicted of killing nearly 300 Westerners, mostly Americans. I am amazed at the deep ... gulf that separates the U.S. from most of the developing world."

o "The answer to dealing with the Middle East and Muslim world is simple. First, we become energy independent of the Middle East by whatever means necessary. Second, we have as little as possible economically and politically to do with them. Third, we tell them that we will stay over here and mind our own business and you do the same. If you intrude on our space or the territory of one of our real allies or try something like 9/11 again, you will never forget our military response. If will be quick and very effective."

o "Gadhafi should not be allowed to set a foot on or fly over any American soil. Period!"

o "The us vs. them, the U.S. vs. the rest of the world attitude, leads us nowhere. An eye for an eye attitude leaves the whole world blind."
