Halloween celebration set for Oct. 29

SMITHSBURG -- Town officials said during a Smithsburg Town Council meeting Tuesday night they have started getting calls from residents about when the town will celebrate Halloween.

As a result, council members were polled and they agreed to celebrate Halloween on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Police chief has surgery

SMITHSBURG -- Smithsburg Police Chief George L. Knight Jr. has been away from his office following surgery due to a disc problem in his neck, Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said Tuesday night.

"He's pretty tough, but it will be a while before he's back in full duty," Myers said during a Smithsburg Town Council meeting.

Myers said Knight is, however, able to monitor business in the police department.

Council member Jerome Martin said the 46 hours the police department spent on foot patrols in August was an "amazing turnaround" for the department.

Martin said that level of foot patrols is something he has long sought for the town.
