Sewer work cancels Martinsburg's Rail Days

August 30, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The 2009 Roundhouse Rail Days event has been canceled, the Berkeley County Roundhouse Authority announced recently.

According to a news release issued Thursday, the Roundhouse Authority cited concern for the public's safety because of major sewer construction in the area. The construction was set to begin this week, according to the release.

Clarence "CEM" Martin III, chairman of the Roundhouse Authority, said the move was a major disappointment to the board.

"We always look forward to Rail Days ... but, as always, the public safety must be uppermost in our minds," he said in the release.

"We were especially happy to have moved Rail Days to a new and cooler date in October. Now we find ourselves in the midst of a major construction project," he said.

Rosetta Chiofalo, roundhouse administrator, said Rail Days should be back in October 2010 and that the roundhouse will participate in National Train Day in early May 2010.

Rail Days annually attracts a large family crowd with music, Civil War re-enactors, food, train rides and vendors of all kinds.
