Harley riders gather in Fred Williams' memory

August 29, 2009

Recently, James Williams Jr. discovered a photo of his dad, Fred Williams, and uncles which was published in The Herald-Mail as a "Remember when?" feature.

The caption from that photo read, "Hagerstown bikers from 1910 include, from left, Ira Keedy, George Snyder, Bud Summers, Smook Rohrer, Fred Williams and Charlie Snyder. The photo was submitted by Russell Snyder, son of George Snyder. Russell Snyder lives in Falling Waters, W.Va."

Fred Williams and a friend probably had the first dealership of Harley-Davidson and Excelser motorcycles in Hagerstown, his son said.

He probably never dreamed how many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren would ride Harley's today, his son said. Of his children, James Williams Jr. is his only child that rides a Harley.

However, grandchildren Tim and Kim Williams, Clarence and Kim Hurd, Paul and Julie Smith, Steve Smith, Ruthie and Terry Dooley and great-grandchildren Joseph Hurd, Jon Hurd, Zach Smith, Josh Baker and friends Mark and Lisa Shoop, Rob and Tina Orndorff, Karen and Todd Showe, Mike Calandrelle and Wayne Wallach all ride Harleys. They all decided to have a Harley get-together in his memory on July 25. Fred Williams was born July 25, 1890. Harley relatives not pictured include Jerry Bussard, Dee Dee and Danny Jordan, Fred Smith, Brett Mefford, Audra Martenot and Mark Haddock.
