Two arrested after disturbance on Mount campus

August 27, 2009

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Police say two Mount St. Mary's University students face disorderly conduct and failure to obey a lawful order charges after campus security officers needed help in controlling 300 young people on the eve of the first day of school.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report of students throwing bottles at campus police early Wednesday at the school in Emmitsburg.

They arrived to find about 300 people yelling and partying outside a student apartment building and beer bottles and cans laying on the ground.

Deputies say they arrested Michael Cushwa, 21, of Hagerstown, and 21-year-old John Boyle, 21, of Westfield, N.J., about 12:21 a.m. after they refused to disperse.

College Executive Vice President Dan Soller says such behavior is not characteristic of the school and will not be tolerated on campus.
