CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Guy W. Horst, 91, of Chambersburg, passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at Menno Haven Retirement Community in Chambersburg.

Born April 7, 1918, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Jacob H. and Annie (Kyler) Horst.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary "Lou" Horst, who passed away in February 2009.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg.

Guy was a 1936 graduate of Greencastle High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving with Company K, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division Thunderbirds. He received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in Italy.

He retired in 1980 as a shipping supervisor at General Motors.

Guy was a lifetime member of the Chambersburg VFW, Past Exhaulted-Ruler of BPO Elks Post 600 in Chambersburg and a member of the Detrich-Brechbill American Legion Post 612 in St. Thomas, Pa..


In addition to his parents and wife, he also was preceded in death by five brothers, Charles, James, Paul, Clyde and Harry Horst; and two sisters, Amy Hartman and Ellen Kicklighter.

He is survived by a sister, Mary Keller, of Hagerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. John Dromazos will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Chambersburg VFW.

Friends will be received Thursday one hour before services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Guy's name to First United Methodist Church, 225 S. Second St., Chambersburg, PA 17201; or to Hagerstown Rescue Mission, 125 N. Prospect St., Hagerstown, MD 21740-4718.
