James M. Wilhide, 77

James M. Wilhide, 77, of Paradise Church Road in Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at Golden Living Center of Hagerstown.

Born Nov. 2, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Oscar M. and Helen (Todd) Wilhide.

He retired from the United States Postal Service's Hagerstown office.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown, serving on the church council and teaching R.C.I.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 378 of Hagerstown and Eagles Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Martha E. Wilhide, whom he married Feb. 14, 1974; three sons, Paul Thomas Potts of Hagerstown, Brian Russell Potts of Portland, Ore., and Jay Patrick Potts of Smithsburg; one sister, Sally Ann Umbarger; and four grandchildren, Brandon Potts, Megan Potts, Paige Potts and Haley Potts.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew Potts; and three half brothers.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagerstown, with Father Collin Poston officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Church Cemetery, Hancock.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.
