MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A 35-year-old Martinsburg man was in Eastern Regional Jail Tuesday evening, charged with breaking into the Kwik Chek on Rock Cliff Drive in Martinsburg and stealing a safe and a bag of old coins.

Fuquan Hassian Nath, 35, of 2051 Harris Way, was arraigned on charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny by Berkeley County Magistrate W. Randy Smith, according to magistrate court records.

Smith set a $40,000 cash-only bond for Nath, records show.

When Martinsburg Police Department officers responded to an alarm at 1:26 a.m. at the business at 301 Rock Cliff Drive, they found glass in the front door had been broken and another section of glass over another door was broken, according to a news release by Cpl. S.F. Doyle.

While police were tracking marks left by the safe being dragged from the scene, a vehicle drove into the area, stopped and turned off its lights, according to Doyle.

"Seconds later, (the driver) turned (the) lights back on and attempted to flee the area past officers who were attempting to stop the vehicle," Doyle said in the news release.

The vehicle was quickly stopped by officers from the Martinsburg Police Department, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department and the West Virginia State Police, Doyle said.

The suspect was a passenger in the stopped vehicle and Doyle indicated police believe all items stolen in the burglary, including a bag of old coins, and $6,685.26 and a Visa card in the safe were recovered.
