Mail Call

August 25, 2009

"Frankly, I'm amazed at all the whining and complaining about Social Security, when in fact everyone that's on it received a generous ... raise in January '09. What's the problem, people? We may not get any the next few years, but we should be glad for what we're receiving now, should we not? My wife and I are seniors, and we were happy for such a nice raise on ours."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I see where the Board of Education is buying school supplies for the schools that are needy. Aren't they all? Why are just the schools in Hagerstown considered needy? Don't they have any poor people out in the county such as Smithsburg, Cascade, Old Forge or Conococheague? Give all parents a break this year, not just a chosen few."

- Washington County

"I'm calling about the mosquitos around Hagerstown. They usually come with stagnant water. I do know that Listerine mixed with water will take care of them. Just spray it outside around your patio, your yard, your garden and around your house inside around the frame. I do know that it works very well."

"On behalf of Washington County residents, brother, you don't speak for me and you don't speak for a lot of people OK? I'm not sorry that that guy was carrying that sign. ... I wouldn't do anything to hurt Obama or his kids but I don't like him regardless and I think that everyone that voted for him owes me an apology for putting him in office which was the most childish, immature and irresponsible action ever taken by the American people. Believe it."

- Maugansville

"Most people in the area are usually nice and respectful of neighbors' property. But these rude and inconsiderate that are traveling up and down our roads that are throwing out trash, dirty diapers, bottles, backing up and damaging fences, breaking signs and destroying mailboxes. Carry a bag and keep your trash in it and take it home with you. If you damage property at least put an 'I'm sorry' note in the mail box when you damage something."

- Clear Spring

"Do you want to know who else is going to be hurt by this Clunkers for Cash program besides us poor taxpayers? The working poor people and the charities that depend on donated used cars. If Obama really wanted to help the poor and working people he would just give the money to the car dealerships and give these cars to the people who really need them."

- Hagerstown

"I just want to say that school has begun with a lot of sports going on and these coaches are handing out the rule books. One of the rules is that there is no cussing, no profanity, no cussing of any kind. I feel that this should also be part of the coaches' rules. I've heard coaches use language that I never want any of my children to hear. This rule should also go for the coaches."

- Washington County

"To the person who thinks that they will get the same health insurance as the president and Congress then think again."

- Falling Waters, W.Va.

"I'd just like to say that Tim Rowland's article about the health care dilemma, Thursday, Aug. 20, was one of his best ever. Thank you. Thank him."

- Hagerstown

"I just want to say it's about time that somebody has told the truth and exposed it for what it is. I'm talking about this health care bill. Thank you Tim Rowland. You are right on the money."

- Hagerstown

"You know, people, we go to work, if you have a job, pay taxes, but our leaders with their greed and wasteful spending has made the United States how it is today. And here is just one example - just one. In Florida, they are building a tunnel that is going to cost $3.4 million, taxpayers' money. This is not a joke. It's for turtles. We lose our homes and turtles get a bailout."

- Clear Spring

"If the government cannot run Cash for Clunkers right, how are they going to run a government-run health care for everybody? When I heard that some of the dealers are already gonna stop doin' it because they only got 2 percent of their money so far that they spend out - And now they tell me they want to run health care. Come on now."

- Boonsboro

"Does anybody know if they're gonna be widening Eastern Boulevard between Potomac Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard? If somebody knows that, could they respond to this? It would be so great. It takes like 15 minutes to get across that three-mile road. It would be really nice if somebody could let me know."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to say that I don't go to work to kiss up to anyone, such as my bosses or anyone. I mean, I know that there is people that go to work that works for the same employer that I do that kisses up to their bosses and to certain people. I mean, what do people get out of that, anyway? I mean, I just go to work to do my job. ... I mean, I'm not a lifer like some people are."

- Greencastle, Pa.
