John W. Keller, 82, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 25, 1926, in Piedmont, W.Va., he was the son of the late George and Louise Keller.

John was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in Europe.

He was hired by Fairchild as an inspector and also was a member of the Fairchild Packets semi-professional basketball team from 1951 to 1958. The following year, he moved to the Hub City League and stayed there. He was named to the league's All-Star team 10 times and won a trophy in the 1959-60 season for scoring the most points in one game, 36. He also was president of the Hub City League for seven years, vice president for three and statistician for several more.

John also was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 of Hagerstown and VFW Post 6319 of Greencastle, Pa. He later retired from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown.


He is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Jo Ann (Koontz) Keller; one daughter, Robin Nye and husband, Stephen; and one son, Kim Keller and wife, Rachel, all of Hagerstown; two sisters, Irene Sante of Uniontown, Pa., and Patty Beaver of Westernport, Md.; and two grandchildren, Bryce Keller and Ashley Gorombol.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy Lynn Peters, who passed away in 2004.

Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery, with military honors being conducted by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093.
